I had the same question about our uniform. I was told we wear the gi since it is similar to what the Monks wore/wear. I do wear the "traditional" black Frog Button uniform for Tai Chi. My understanding is that the Frog Button uniform was popularized by the "Brue Lee" era movies and became generally associated with Kung Fu in the US.
